Myron W. Krueger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And finally I'd have to include Videoplace created by Myron Krueger right back in the 1970s. He came up with the supremely elegant idea of having the spectator stand in front of a screen and a camera and seeing the image of themselves projected back onto the screen in real time. The result is a literal embodiment of the audience within the artwork where the body itself becomes the interface to kind of self portrait. It's a basic blueprint for some of the best interactive art created in the last decades - I'm thinking of work by artists like Scott Snibbe, Golan Levin, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and many others. Videoplace helped us to recognize what Krueger called "a new category of beauty" in the world - an aesthetic which is properly interactive - and for this I am truly grateful to him.

Jacco Olivier - Victoria Miro Gallery
Young Dutch painter Jacco Olivier fuses painting and the moving image in tiny animated works that invest small events with magical lyricism, while at the same time illuminate the narrative process of painting. He begins with an image that he paints over time and again; photographing each stage until the original degenerates and finally disappears all together. What remains is an animated history of the work that captures scraps of narrative and visual memory joined to form a moving picture. Olivier presents a microcosmic animated world of informal situations - a frog attempts to cross a road, men walk in a field, an airplane flies overhead. There is a casual uneasiness and tension, a feeling that something is about to happen or has just happened, but there are no definitive answers, beginnings or conclusions. Olivier's animations instead find their place in the margins, somewhere between a story and a painting.

As you can see by the film segments on this website I have chosen to do something with my illness. This summer (2006) I will ride my motorized wheel chair across the state of New Jersey to raise awareness for ALS, but also, because it is important when you are dying to have something to live for. Right now the thing I am living for is to be at peace with myself, number one, and number two, to pursue my life's work of making a feature film about something which reaches for the truth. All of my adult life, I have been making films - films about far out characters, films about vulnerable souls. Now, in the last years of my life, the film I am making, the character I tried so hard to write all these years, the story which eluded me on paper, is unfolding across my body, inside my nervous system, and in front of my eyes. I have become the character in the film which I have been striving to bring to the screen all these years.

defenders of faith
Defenders of the Faith - New York Times
During the Seventh Crusade, led by St. Louis, Yves le Breton reported how he once encountered an old woman who wandered down the street with a dish full of fire in her right hand and a bowl full of water in her left hand. Asked why she carried the two bowls, she answered that with the fire she would burn up Paradise until nothing remained of it, and with the water she would put out the fires of Hell until nothing remained of them: "Because I want no one to do good in order to receive the reward of Paradise, or from fear of Hell; but solely out of love for God."

Tokihiro Sato: Photography Artist
The tiny points of light, or illuminated lines in Sato’s images record his movements through space. Using a large-format camera set on a tripod and timed for exposures lasting from one to three hours, he moves quickly throughout the described space. When shooting in daylight, he flashes a mirror at the sun. For nocturnal or interior views he “draws” with a small flashlight. The resulting photographs capture exquisitely-detailed scenes, punctuated by tiny pinpoints or dense linear patterns of light that, because of the extreme length of the exposures and the fact that he is in constant motion, depict Sato’s presence but not his image.

My desire is to set up a situation to which I can take you and let you see. I am interested in light because of my interest in our spiritual nature and the things that empower us. My art deals with light itself, not as the bearer of revelation, but as revelation itself.
Turrell is one of the USA’s most eminent artists. Light is his material and obsession. His beautiful, thought-provoking works affect the viewer’s perceptual sense, enabling pause and meditation.

ESPN.com - BLACKHISTORY - Jackson: The NBA prophet
His life is bigger than the NBA. It's bigger than the war he hates so much. When it's all said and done, when the clap meets the chrome on his coffin, the dash that will be between the dates on his headstone will stand for something. Too many of us -- professionals, professional athletes, those who feel we have something to lose -- allow that hyphen to be meaningless, to mean nothing.
To be silent. A flat line.
Because in the hour of chaos we are white lint, not black steel. 50 cent lyrics, not million dollar stanzas.

martin puryear
http://www.donaldyoung.com/puryear/martin_puryear_index.html
A desire to "make things rather than representations of them" led Martin Puryear from his early training in painting and drawing to sculpture.
"Minimalism legitimized in my mind something I have always focused on—the power of the simple, single thing as opposed to a full-blown complex array of things." But Puryear adds important enhancements to that fundamental simplicity -- a richness of ambiguous suggestion, a complexity of balances, weights, light, and textures, and a master's skill with exacting craft processes in a variety of materials. All of those elements come together in a unique and profoundly satisfying classical harmony.
Like many artists of his generation who witnessed the destructiveness of modern warfare and the deterioration of life in American cities, Martin Puryear turned for inspiration to the craft-oriented life of prehistoric societies, whose relationship with nature was fundamental and ritualistic. While retaining the legacy of Minimalism in his use of simple, reductive forms, Puryear rejected the machine aesthetic associated with the work of Donald Judd. Inspired by a lengthy residence in West Africa, his sculptures are hand-constructed from organic materials, usually wood. Puryear treats substances as if they had a life of their own; their essence is preserved, not obliterated, in order to maintain a harmony between the material and the action of its creation.
Self is an outstanding example of Puryear's concern for the underlying forces that govern the formal geometries of abstract sculpture. Although built of thin wood layers over a hollow core, the piece looks solid and heavy like an immense stone jutting out of the earth. The artist has described the piece in terms of its reference to natural form and to the mystery of existence: "It looks as though it might have been created by erosion, like a rock worn by sand and weather. It's meant to be a visual notion of the self, rather than any particular self the self as a secret entity, as a secret, hidden place."

Dan Peterman
dan peterman : plastic economies
Recycling, reusing, and reworking are the core of Dan Peterman's art. In his characteristic pragmatic way, he scrutinizes the environmental and social exhaustion of goods and resources in today's society. Peterman, internationally known and based in Chicago, has worked since the mid-1980s with ideas about recycling systems and recycled materials. He seeks to reveal processes by which people interact with both the natural world and their technological surroundings. The modest objects or materials he selects-plastic, wood mulch, cel-foam (made from scraps recycled during the manufacture of athletic shoes and other fabrics), aluminum, and prepackaged foods, among others-elucidate interlocking social, political, and personal systems that make up life in the modern world.

James Cohan Gallery: Current Exhibition
ROXY PAINE Bad Planet, 2005 foam, epoxy, lacquer, oil, stainless steel 65 X 60 X 60 inches
Beginning January 14, 2006, the James Cohan Gallery will present an exhibition devoted to new work by sculptor Roxy Paine. The exhibition runs through February 25.
In his new work, the artist mirrors natural processes themselves, drawing increasingly on the tension between the organic and the built environment, between the human desire for order and nature’s drive to reproduce. As Steven Henry Madoff noted in The New York Times, Paine creates work in which “the pastoral and the processed bump heads with dizzying force.”

Thomas Heatherwick: Designer: Buddhist Temple
Then there is also something like human instincts: when you can tell that something has been made with love, you are more likely to open up your mind and come closer to a part you are unfamiliar with.
---
"I'm a three-dimensional designer," he says. "I can't describe myself more specifically than that." But really he's distinguished by an attention to materials, ideas and place-making. "I'm not thinking about the best way to clip your seatbelt in - I enjoy that, but I'm very interested in how you create better environments for people to be in and more interesting functional spaces and places."
Much of the work that Heatherwick has done is in the realm of public art, an issue that Heatherwick feels is usually bound up with place. "When someone says they want public art, what they mean is, 'I want a place to be special.' I can see why people say, 'Why does it need to be art, why not architecture, why isn't it urban design?' I don't think it matters in the end as long as it ends up being considered in its environment."
http://www.icon-magazine.co.uk/issues/january/heatherwick.htm
---
This is the Heatherwick difference. Other urban designers might have a mad inspired idea, dismiss it on grounds of practicality or unprofitability, and then do something conventional. They would use off-the-peg materials and aim for a general slight lift in quality, rather than concentrating all the effort on getting a high concept to work.
http://www.hughpearman.com/articles3/blue.html
---
'All our projects are public projects,' he says. 'When we first got going, I did a couple of private projects, and I think I found that you put so much into something, and you realise you want it to reach more people. I'm less interested if something's only going to be of benefit to the people who've paid a lot of money. The best experiences are when you are doing things for the public, rather than going to an art gallery to be amazed. Making something better is very motivating, and also because it's harder. That's why things don't happen, because it's hard.'

"I try to draw upon this universal knowledge in some of my work," Donovan explains, "because it creates a very real physical connection to the work that only becomes evident when people recognize the object or material that is being compiled.
And, while the sculptures often reference biological or geographical phenomena (such as the growth patterns of algae or the stratifications of rocks), the physical properties of the materials (both their limitations and potentials) provide the structural blueprint for the "organic" formations they assume.

Weather Project: Turbine Hall
Guardian Unlimited | Arts features | G2's human logo project at Tate Modern
The desire to draw ourselves into Eliasson's picture is like the urge to skim pebbles on the sea. The sea is vast, it dwarfs us, it is unknowable; by throwing a stone into the waves you feel part of it, even its author, as if you are reshaping, for a second, this timeless spectacle. Making shapes in the giant mirrored sky of Eliasson's artificial weather system is just as ephemeral and harmless as throwing stones into the water - and as natural.
Art, it seems, is turning increasingly into this kind of spiritual mass event. Something really is happening here. Art in the 90s was aggressively individual and iconic - its intent was to communicate something about the maker's life and feelings. Tracey Emin's My Bed is the supreme example. Perhaps art at the beginning of the 21st century is more about the public than the artist.

hether in his mysterious paintings, reminiscent of biological and geographical formations, or in his sculptures of sanctuaries and sacred monumental pieces, or in the design of furniture and ambient space for a hospital meditation room, Kahn's work draws us into meditation. As Ted Prescott puts it, Kahn's art causes us to dip into the "deep wells within us where longing and memory intermingle." The Philadelphia Inquirer calls his work "perfectly balanced between extremes of abstract and representational.... having an uneasy mixture of authority and idiosyncrasy—and sometimes just a bit beyond human reach."

About how much of a role would you say marketing plays in the early years of a practice? What outlets are best to use for reaching the public?
Marketing is essential. Market your arses off kids! Marketing is fundamental because it is your only opportunity to say to the world "this is what we do and what we want to do in the future." If you don't loudly dictate the path that you wish to take from the outset then clients or other external factors will generate your trajectory. Once your practice has an image and a direction it is very hard to steer it in any other direction. I'd say that we aimed at 80% marketing/positioning and 20% fee paid work in the first 3 years. We are now 3.5 years old and have only just begun focusing more on paid work. Our patience in the first few years has given us a trajectory that we really like.

The selection process for the works was largely born out of a number of “symptoms” proposed by Omar Calabrese to define our times: “Limit, excess, detail, fragment, rhythm, repetition, instability, metamorphosis, knot, labyrinth, disorder, chaos, distortion, perversion…” The majority of the pieces are notable for their scenographic qualities and their tendency to combine various media and supports in order to attain a strong visual impact.

The man who used maths to make music
Telegraph | Arts | The man who used maths to make music
What fascinated Xenakis about that ancient culture was the stark opposition between mathematical Pythagorean order and irrational Dionysiac frenzy. He wanted that fierce tension in his music. It was only in the early 1950s that he found ways of doing it, by treating music as a kind of aural sculpture

On the surface it's this cartoonish, ether-chugging adventure, but then there are all these darker themes—the death of the American Dream, instant gratification, how Americans find happiness—all that's underneath. So it's like a thrill ride to read the book, but then you pick up other messages along the way.

Hey, You Got Something To Eat? | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
Hey. Come on. Don't be greedy. I said I'd like a little something to eat. Put something in my mouth now. Let me chew something, you fucker.
Oh shit, man, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that. That was uncalled for. There's no problem. I'm really sorry, friend. Food-giver. That's what you are. There's the stuff. Food-giver. You're my friend.
Hey, by the by... You got anything to eat? Don't go out of your way on my account. It's nothing, really—I don't need nothing. But if you got something, I'll eat it.

I know this has come up before here, but I did a forum search and couldn't come up with anything. Does anyone recommend any online rapid prototyping shops? A friend of mine is looking for some stereolithography work to be done, pieces are about the size of an apple. Any help would be appreciated.

you can try spectrum3d.com, though they are a bit expensive because they are resin only, but they have a badass interface. A better (and by better I mean cheaper) bet is globaldesignworks.com. They have a starch printer which is much less expensive. If your friend wants to make the most of it he should prob. try to find other people that need to print and go in as a group, otherwise the per cubic inch is pretty steep.

Better BW photo conversion
slower.net log: B&W Conversion
B&W Conversion
Experimenting with black and white conversion methods in Photoshop. I tried the channel mixer and a couple of third-party plugins, but I like the results from the method here, which is apparently due to a gentleman named Rob Carr. I'll summarize the steps, since I found the presentation on that site a little confusing.
* Convert to Lab Color (Image > Mode > Lab Color)
* Select the "Lightness" channel (Channels palette > "Lightness" channel)
* Convert to Grayscale (Image > Mode > Grayscale)
* Make the new channel the selection (Control-click the thumbnail in the new "Gray" channel)
* Invert selection (Select > Inverse) (Leave this selection active for the next steps)
* Fill the selection with black (Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color... > Select color #000000)
* Tweak the opacity of the fill layer (Layers palette > select "Color Fill 1" > set opacity to ~50%)
* Create a new Levels (or Curves if you prefer) adjustment layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels)
* Tweak the levels in the adjustment layer as you like
In addition, I incorporated a tip I found elsewhere which gives a haloed edges effect I think can be effective for B&W, if used sparingly. Continuing from above:
* Select "Background" Layer (Layers palette > select "Background")
* Duplicate layer (Layer > Duplicate Layer...)
* Run the "High Pass" Filter (Filter > Other > High Pass... > Radius 10)
* Convert the filtered layer's blending mode to "Hard Light" (Layers palette > Select "Background copy" > set blending to "Hard Light")
* Reduce the opacity of the "Background copy" layer to a good point (I start at 25%
